Earl Leiken - Video
I have been a resident of Shaker Heights since the 1970s, raised two sons who both attended Shaker schools and both graduated from Shaker Heights High School, and was honored to serve as the city’s mayor from 2007 to 2018.
On September 11, 2019, my granddaughter Caleigh Leiken led an assembly at Shaker Heights High School on her 18th birthday. Caleigh was born on September 11, 2001 in New York City, and she serves as a student ambassador for the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in NYC.
In July 2009, we were honored to host President Barack Obama at a town hall at Shaker Heights High School.
Each year, we provided a State of the City address to discuss developments in our home town.
In 2009, I was honored to participate in a Cleveland City Club forum on solutions to the foreclosure crisis in Northeast Ohio.
Developing Van Aken into the Market District was a major initiative of our city over the past ten years. This forum in 2016 represented one of our many community discussions about developing a new place for Shaker residents to dine and meet.
For my 80th birthday, my sons made a short film telling the story of my life, narrated by my dear friend Peter Lawson Jones. Watching this film with friends and family on my 80th birthday was one of the great moments of my life, and brought many wonderful memories and more than few tears of joy.
